Tivat or Podgorica Airport? Picking Up a Rental Car for Budva

Budva has no airport, so the first decision for a Budva trip is where to land. There are two options: Tivat (TIV), a short drive up the coast, and Podgorica (TGD), the capital’s airport on the other side of the mountains. Both work with a rental car. The better choice depends on your flight, the rest of your itinerary and how you want to collect the car.

The two airports at a glance

  • Tivat (TIV) is on the Bay of Kotor coast. By road it is roughly 20 km to Budva, about 25 to 30 minutes in normal traffic. It is the closest airport to Budva, Kotor and Tivat itself.
  • Podgorica (TGD) is inland, south of the capital. By road it is roughly 60 to 65 km to Budva, typically around an hour and a quarter.

On distance alone, Tivat wins easily. But the airport you can actually get a good flight to often matters more, and Podgorica has advantages of its own.

When Tivat is the better choice

  • You are staying on the coast. If your week is Budva, Kotor, Perast and the beaches, Tivat puts you there in half an hour.
  • You arrive late. A short, flat drive along the coast is easier after a long day than a mountain road in the dark.
  • You want the car delivered. Budva-based companies commonly deliver to Tivat airport. Some advertise it free of charge, because it is close to their base.

The catch is summer traffic. The coast road between Tivat, the Jaz junction and Budva can slow to a crawl on July and August afternoons. “Half an hour” is a normal day, not a Saturday changeover day.

When Podgorica makes sense

  • Your flight is better or cheaper. Podgorica has a different set of routes, and on some dates it is the only sensible option.
  • You are touring the country, not just the coast. Lake Skadar, the Ostrog monastery and the road north to Durmitor all start more naturally from Podgorica. A common plan is to land in Podgorica, see the interior, and finish on the coast.
  • You want a one-way rental. Some local companies offer one-way rentals between Budva, Tivat and Podgorica, so you could fly into one airport and out of the other.

The drive from Podgorica to Budva crosses the hills towards the coast. It is a good main road, but it climbs and winds, so allow more time than the distance suggests, especially at night.

How airport pickup works with a local company

With the international chains you go to a desk in the arrivals hall. Local Budva companies usually work differently: someone meets you outside arrivals with a sign and your name, hands over the car in the car park and does the paperwork there. For that to go smoothly:

  • Send your flight number when you book, so they can follow delays.
  • Agree on a phone or WhatsApp number you will both use on the day. Montenegro is not in the EU, so check with your mobile provider what calls and data cost there before you travel.
  • Ask whether a night arrival costs extra, and what happens if your flight is very late.
  • Do the walk-around anyway: photos of every side of the car, the fuel gauge and the mileage before you drive off.

Returning the car

Agree on the return in advance: the same airport, a different one, or your apartment in Budva. Most local companies are flexible about this. If you are dropping the car at the airport for an early flight, ask how they handle a return before their office opens. Allow for summer traffic on the coast road on the way to Tivat.

A word on the chains

If you prefer the familiar process, the international brands at both airports are a perfectly reasonable choice. Compare the full price including insurance, and check the size of the deposit hold on your card. A local company is not automatically cheaper. It is often more flexible, and that matters most when you arrive late or want the car brought to you.
