Krujë

Krujë sits about 45 km inland from Durrës, roughly 53 minutes by car in a no-traffic estimate, and longer when Fushë-Krujë is busy. It is a short drive and makes an easy half-day. Go early to avoid the worst of the morning traffic, and fill the tank before you leave if you plan to carry on somewhere else afterwards.

Apollonia

Apollonia is about 89 km from Durrës and roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by car via Fier and the village of Pojan. This is the longest drive in this list, so give it a full day and start in the morning. The route leaves the main road for Pojan at the end, so allow a little extra time for that stretch on the way back.

Cape Rodon

Cape Rodon is about 51 km north of Durrës, around 75 minutes in a no-traffic estimate, and slower in practice because the roads narrow through olive country. That last stretch is the point of the trip: it is a coastal drive rather than a highway run, so allow more time than the number suggests and avoid rushing it after dark.

Tirana

Tirana is 37 km from Durrës and takes 45 to 60 minutes by car; from Skanderbeg Square it is about 45 minutes to the centre of Durrës. It is the simplest city day out, though parking in the centre takes a little planning. Use a public car park instead of circling for street space, and keep some cash or a bank card ready, depending on the car park.

A one-day loop

For a single day that takes in both the hills and the coast, start early and head inland to Krujë first, while the road through Fushë-Krujë is still quiet. Come back down towards the coast in the late morning, then turn north for Cape Rodon, where the road narrows through olive country. Finish with the run back down the coast to Durrës. The timings above are measured from Durrës, so add the legs between the stops and check a map before you set off; this is a full day, not a morning.

If you would rather have two shorter days, pair Krujë with Tirana and keep Apollonia or Cape Rodon for another outing. Both pairings keep the driving manageable and leave time to actually stop.

Practical tips

Speed limits are 40 km/h in towns and villages, 80 km/h on secondary and local roads outside towns, 90 km/h on main roads between towns and up to 130 km/h on motorways where signed. Albania has zero tolerance for alcohol, and dipped headlights are compulsory at all times outside towns. Keep your licence and the car’s papers with you.

Paid street parking in Durrës is Zone A at 100 ALL an hour, about €1.10, and Zone B at 40 ALL, about €0.44. From 1 June to 30 September it applies every day from 08:00 to 20:00; from 1 October to 31 May it applies Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00. At the public car parks at Jorgji Ziu Square, Vollga Square and the Ramazan Njala Sports Palace the first five minutes are free and payment is by bank card only, with 100 ALL for up to two hours, 200 ALL for two to five hours, 300 ALL for five to eight hours, 400 ALL for eight to twelve hours and 500 ALL for twelve to twenty-four hours.

Parking where it is not allowed brings a police fine of 1,000 to 3,000 ALL, and where a sign warns of it the police can tow or clamp the car until the fine is paid on the spot. Beyond parking, two things catch people out on a day trip: fuel and mileage. If your rental is full-to-full, fill up before you return, and check your daily allowance before a long loop, since one local company includes 250 km a day and charges €0.15 for each extra kilometre. Crossings into Durrës

Most ferries connect Durrës with Bari, around nine hours with the fastest sailings a little under that, and Ancona, roughly sixteen and a half hours. Both routes are usually overnight. The Bari crossing is worked by Adria Ferries, Grandi Navi Veloci and Ventouris, while Ancona is served by Adria Ferries. A few services also reach Trieste, and Brindisi appears rarely. A new ferry terminal opened in 2013, and as of 2014 the port ranked as the largest passenger port in Albania and one of the largest in the Adriatic.

An overnight sailing means you will step off early, often before rental offices open. Build that into the plan rather than assuming a car will be waiting at six in the morning.

Documents to have ready

Keep your passport or national ID and your driving licence where you can reach them quickly. Companies here ask for a licence held for at least a year, and one asks for two years’ driving experience. Minimum ages vary, from 21 for most of one fleet to 23 at another, so check before you pay a deposit.

One local firm asks for a credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit, and releases the hold once the car comes back in the same condition. Inspect the car in daylight if you can, photograph every panel, and note the fuel level and the return time in the agreement. Full-to-full is a common fuel policy, and a late return can cost real money: one company charges a fifth of the daily rate for every hour of delay.

Bringing a car or renting here

If you bring your own car off the ferry, you travel on your own insurance and paperwork, and you carry the risk if something goes wrong. If you rent in Durrës, the car comes with Albanian cover, but you must not take it across a border without the company’s written permission and a Green Card for every neighbouring country except Kosovo. Sarandë is a good town to stay in, but much of what makes the far south of Albania special lies just outside it: an ancient city in a lagoon forest, a spring of startling blue water, a stone town above a valley, and beaches that look more Caribbean than Balkan. All of them are within about an hour by car. Here are the classic day trips from Sarandë, with rough distances and the practical details that make each one easier.

Butrint and Ksamil (south, about 18 km)

Butrint is the big one: a UNESCO-listed archaeological site with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers, set in woodland beside a lagoon. It is about 18 km south of Sarandë, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, on the road that passes through Ksamil.

  • Go early. The site is cooler, quieter and easier to park at in the morning, especially in summer.
  • Allow two to three hours if you want to see the theatre, the baptistery and the walls without rushing.
  • Bring water and good shoes; the paths are uneven.

Ksamil, on the way, is the obvious place to finish the day: small beaches, clear water and islets just offshore. In July and August it is very crowded and parking is hard, so arrive early or late. Outside the peak season it is a different, much calmer place.

The Blue Eye (inland, about 25 km)

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a natural spring where deep blue water wells up from a pool among the trees. It is about 25 km from Sarandë, roughly 30 to 45 minutes, on the inland road towards Gjirokastër. A short signed access road leads from the main road to the site.

  • There is a small entrance fee. Have some lek in cash.
  • From the car park you walk a short way to the spring. Thirty to forty minutes there is enough for most visitors.
  • It is popular with tour buses from midday onwards. Early morning is best.

Gjirokastër (inland, about 55 km)

Gjirokastër is a UNESCO-listed Ottoman town of stone-roofed houses climbing up to a huge castle. From Sarandë it is about an hour’s drive, roughly 55 km, over the hills on the same inland road that passes the Blue Eye. That makes the two an easy combination.

  • The old town is steep with cobbled lanes. Park lower down and walk up, rather than driving into the narrow streets.
  • The castle, the old bazaar and one of the restored tower houses make a full half-day.
  • Stay for lunch: the town is known for its local dishes.

A good one-day loop

If you have only one day with the car, this works well:

  • Morning: drive inland to the Blue Eye before the crowds.
  • Midday: continue to Gjirokastër for the castle and lunch.
  • Afternoon: drive back to Sarandë for a late swim, or save Ksamil and Butrint for the next morning.

Further along the coast

North of Sarandë, the coast road climbs along the Riviera towards Borsh, Himarë and Dhërmi, with long beaches and villages above the sea. It is a beautiful but winding drive. Treat it as a separate day, or as part of a road trip north rather than a quick outing. The road towards Konispol and the Greek border at Kakavijë is quieter; if you plan to cross into Greece, you need the rental company’s permission first.

  • Start early in summer. Roads, car parks and sites are all easier before 10:00.
  • Carry cash. Entrance fees, parking attendants and small cafés often prefer lek.

For many visitors, Albania starts with a short boat ride. Corfu is just across the strait from Sarandë, and the ferry turns a Greek island holiday into a trip to Butrint, Ksamil and the Albanian Riviera. The question is how to get around once you land. You can bring a car over on the ferry, or you can arrive as a foot passenger and pick up an Albanian rental car at the port. For most people the second option is simpler.

The crossing

Ferries run daily between Corfu town and Sarandë. The main operators are Ionian Seaways and Finikas Lines. The fast boats take about half an hour; slower vessels and car ferries take longer, roughly an hour or more. Timetables change with the season. In summer there are several sailings a day; in winter far fewer. Check the operators’ own timetables for your date, and book ahead in July and August.

You cross an external border of the EU, so bring your passport or national ID card. Allow time for passport control on both sides, especially on busy summer mornings.

Option 1: bring a car on the ferry

Not every sailing carries vehicles, and car space is limited when it is offered. The bigger issue is usually the car itself. If you rented it in Corfu, the Greek rental company must allow you to take it out of the EU into Albania, and the insurance must be valid there. Not every company allows this, and some charge extra for it. Ask before you book, and get the permission in writing.

If you are driving your own car, check that your insurance covers Albania; you may need a green card. Then confirm with the ferry operator that your sailing takes vehicles.

Option 2: walk off and pick up a car in Sarandë (usually simpler)

What to check before you book

  • Insurance in plain words. Ask: “If the car is damaged, how much do I pay?” Basic cover often leaves a high excess.
  • Deposit. Cash, a card hold or none. If it is cash, get a receipt for it.
  • Pickup point. If you arrive by ferry, ask for handover at the port. Several companies do this as standard.
  • Cross-border plans. Greece is close, but taking an Albanian rental car across the border needs the company’s permission and the right insurance. Ask in advance, not at pickup.
  • The car’s age. Sarandë fleets include many older cars. If air conditioning or an automatic matters to you in August, confirm it for the specific car.
  • Photos at pickup. Photograph every side of the car, the fuel level and the mileage before you leave.

When to book

July and August are busy all along the Albanian Riviera, and automatics and larger cars go first. For summer, contact two or three companies a few weeks ahead and compare the total with insurance.
