Durrës has a cluster of rental firms that actually live here, rather than at an airport counter half an hour away. The advantage is simple: the car often comes to your hotel, the port or the address you give, the handover happens in person, and the same people answer the phone if something goes wrong later. Several also cover Tirana and Rinas airport, so you can collect on arrival and still deal with a local office.

Rates are low by western European standards, but the headline price is only part of the deal. Insurance, a mileage allowance, a deposit and a fuel policy all change the real cost, so read the terms before you pay. These companies are listed alphabetically. Donald Rental

Prices start from €25 a day for a Mercedes C180 petrol-LPG, €40 a day for a VW Passat CC or a Mercedes E220, and €50 a day for a seven-seat Chevrolet Captiva.

Open Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 21:00.
The listed fleet runs from a Toyota Auris or Toyota Yaris at €25 a day to an Audi A6 at €30, a Golf 7 at €35 and an Audi Q5 at €70.

Kryemadhi Car Rental

Drivers must be at least 23, hold a valid licence and have two years’ driving experience.
The minimum rental is three days; for one or two days, message the company on WhatsApp to check availability.
250 km a day is included, with extra kilometres at €0.15 each.
Every car has mandatory third-party liability insurance, and extra cover is available.
Driving outside Albania is not allowed unless a separate power of attorney is issued for international travel.
A late return costs one fifth of the daily rate for every hour of delay.
Listed cars include a Toyota Yaris at €35, a Mercedes-Benz C-Class at €45 and a Mercedes-Benz Vito at €100.

Seven cars are available, from €7 a day.
The list runs Ford Focus €7, Ford Fiesta €14, Volkswagen Golf €18, Volkswagen Touran €25, Volkswagen Passat €30, and Audi A3 in white or black at €30.

What to check before you book

Ask before you commit. Who can drive: two firms want a licence held for at least a year, one asks for two years’ experience, and minimum ages run from 21 to 23. What is included: third-party cover is standard, but collision damage waiver, zero deductible and extra insurance are worth pricing. How far you can go: one company includes 250 km a day and charges €0.15 for each extra kilometre. And what you pay up front: some take a card hold, others nothing.

Check the border rules too. An Albanian rental needs the company’s written permission and a Green Card for every neighbouring country except Kosovo, and not every car may leave Albania. Photograph the car all round before you drive off and note any existing damage; it saves arguments later.

When to book

The fleets listed here are small, so book ahead if you want a particular model or an automatic. Outside the season, a day or two of notice is usually enough.
